The stunning cream and gilt chinoiserie-decorated case is in a remarkable state of preservation. The clock has a domed shaped hood, a raised panelled base with a double stepped plinth and a long moulded bridge top trunk door. The scenes depicted include exotic pagodas with figures in a rural setting, figures on horseback, musicians playing, and birds on branches.
While some English japanned longcase clocks from the early 18th century have survived, those with cream and yellow ground are particularly rare. A related example, with cartouche panels depicting chinoiserie scenes similar to this clock, is illustrated in H. Huth, Lacquer of the West, Chicago, 1971, fig. 74.
There is also a mahogany longcase clock of related form by Robert Mawley in the collection at Polesden Lacey, Surrey (NT 1246209).
