The Knight of Glin and Peill, James, Irish Furniture (New Haven & London, 2007)
A George II Irish mahogany side table, the moulded top above a shaped frieze centered by a carved mask of Venus, the front and back legs hipped and carved with scrolls and shells, terminating in paw feet.
It is a theme of the finest examples of Irish furniture to feature a central motif, usually a shell or mask of a fantastical beast. The depiction on the present table of a female figure, almost certainly Venus, is particularly rare.
The table is constructed of wonderful quality mahogany and beautifully carved.
